This topic is one that’s quite close to my heart. As the years have gone on I’ve tended steer more and more away from highly processed, chemical-heavy products. And that applies to everything from material I buy for my craft projects right through and especially to the cosmetic products I use on my skin.
Cosmetics play an important role in our daily life. We use a variety of cosmetics throughout the day such as shampoo, lipstick and perfume. Some of the make up we use stays on our skin for many hours — with up to 60% of it being absorbed! (see my tips on makeup for newbies here)
Most people don’t realise that these cosmetics contain harmful chemicals like mercury and dioxane. The build up of chemicals can lead to health problems. Aluminium which is found in most antiperspirants is thought to contribute to Alzheimer’s disease. Benzoates is used as a preservative in cosmetics and causes gastric irritation. Take a look at the label of some of your cosmetics and you are bound to come across the names of some of these chemicals.
What are organic cosmetics?
Organic cosmetics are derived from plant material and other natural sources so do not contain these harmful chemicals. More people are turning to organic cosmetics these days and it is clear to see why. As organic cosmetics are free from nasty chemicals they tend to be safer to use and do not cause irritation to more sensitive skins.
Why use organic?
There is a wide variety of organic cosmetics available so you will find the right product for you regardless of your skin type or skin tone.
Not only do I believe natural organic cosmetics are better for you, they are also more eco friendly. And unlike most other cosmetics, organic cosmetics tend not to have been tested on animals – a major bonus.
You need worry less about skin sensitivity or any negative side-effects when using organic cosmetics. Your hair and skin will not be exposed to harsh chemicals so you won’t need to worry about getting a rash or pimples. If you already suffer from skin problems such as acne and eczema then you will find organic cosmetics are defintely much gentler on your skin.
Some of the compounds found in cosmetics such as nail polish increase the risk of infertility. The doses you are exposed to on a daily basis may seem small but they build up in the body and this increase of toxins causes other health problems.
We don’t hesitate in buying the best clothes or shoes so why compromise when it comes to our skincare? By using natural organic cosmetics you will be benefiting not just your skin but your whole body. The decrease in toxins and chemicals will give you healthier glowing skin and your overall health will be better too. It is definitely worth getting rid of those harmful products and using organic cosmetics instead because your body deserves something more natural.
