Patience is a virtue – but that doesn’t make it any easier when you’re waiting to see the benefits of a new beauty product or cream you’re using 🙂
Two products in particular seem to bring out the most impatience in people – wrinkle creams and whitening creams. Today I want to talk a bit about skin whitening and how long it can take for the effects to start showing.
There are 3 main factors that determine how long it takes. It may take several weeks or even months to fully notice the changes in your skin.
1. Your Skin Type
Your basic skin type is an important factor as this will determine the fundamental way the cream interacts with your skin. Firstly, you should be using your chosen cream twice a day, every single day (or according to the manufacturers instructions). Secondly, make sure you follow good practice for how to apply your creams. Your skin might will be either normal, sensitive or combination.
So roughly how long does it take skin whitening cream to work?:-
- Normal skin will take about 4 to 8 weeks
- Sensitive skin will take 2 to 3 weeks
- Combination skin will take 6 to 8 weeks
2. The Whitening Ingredients
The next factor will of course be the active ingredients in the cream, and the concentration of them. There are many different skin lightening products, and each one will of course be formulated slightly to vastly differently depending on the manufacturer.
Lactic acid, retinoic acid, vitamin C, melawhite, arbutin, and kojic acid are all recognized as effective active ingredients. How much of these ingredients is actually in the cream will determine the effectiveness of the it. As a rough general guide it should have somewhere around 1 to 4 per cent concentration of the active ingredients.
3. The Color Of Your Skin
It’s a simple truth that the darker your skin color the longer it will take. This is simply because the darkest skin will have far more melanin (the pigment in your skin that creates the color), thus the lightening cream will take more time to reduce that melanin amount. As lightening process is gradual you just have to be patient and realistic while waiting for the results, and yes, I’m afraid the darker you are the more patient you will have to be as it will simply take longer.
Always Follow The Instructions
The specific instructions will differ from one product to another. Failure to follow the instructions correctly can result in increased risk of harm or slow whitening effect of the skin. It is advisable to go through the instruction carefully before using the product and make sure you follow them. If you are required to apply the cream twice a day every day, you should not do more than that as it can put your skin at risk. Not using it often enough will make the whitening process slower, or even ineffective. It can be useful to exfoliate first, but be very gentle and read those instructions.
The changes in your skin will typically start showing between three weeks to two-month usage. It is good to start out with realistic expectations though and always consider the factors above. Patience will be required, so do not use a product and then stop just because things didn’t happen within the first week! Stick to one product to the end of the process, and your results should come in time.
